The past year in film has been inevitably contaminated by the unprecedented pandemic situation experienced globally. It is also inevitable that this contagion manifests itself in the form of a commentary on the feeling of media apocalypse we all went through, and the resulting unique and unexpected images, such as the suddenly empty spaces. In “I Gotta Look Good For The Apocalypse”, Ayce Kartal uses some of the footage that defined this last year, found on YouTube or other parts of the internet, turning them into melancholic pictures, exaggerating their dystopian effect. The combination of these images with others that seem out of a virtual reality, a distraction from the real world, creates an alienating effect that underlines the strangeness of everyday reality, as if it were also a simulation. This is Turkish filmmaker Ayce Kartal’s first film at Curtas. (JA)
