Written and directed by the activist and writer Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, this short revolves around the story of four mysterious stones that have been buried in the sands of Hawaii’s famous Waikiki beach for hundreds of years. Legend has it that these stones have held, for over 700 years, the powers of Kapuni, Kinohi, Kahaloa, and Kapaemahu, four legendary spirits who use their powers to help the local population. These spirits are neither male nor female, they are “mahu”, a mix of the two genders. “Kapaemahu” invites us to travel back in time to the forgotten past of Hawaii islands before their colonization.
