In order to visually illustrate the experimental and improvisational component of Chão Maior, musician Yaw Tembe’s ambitious project, Igor Dimitri reclaims some ideas and concepts from the historical tradition of avant-garde and experimental cinema. On the one hand, that involves a research into the materiality of film and its expressive qualities, such as the image grain, or the scratches and the dirtiness in the emulsion. On the other, he explores cinema’s abstract potentialities with a camerawork that dissolves the shapes into light and movement. The vibrant and sensorial result unites musical and cinematic creation in the exploration of their limits and their endless possibilities. Igor Dimitri’s collaboration with Chão Maior extends to the visual component of the band’s live concerts, like the one programmed for Curtas Vila do Conde’s current edition.
