In the Homeric epics, Cassandra was an intrinsically tragic character from Greek mythology, cursed with the gift of prophecy, but discredited and considered mad. In “Cassandra Bitter Tongue”, the protagonist is a scholar doing fieldwork as a “sex cam girl”, conducting an empirical work about cynicism, masturbation, sexuality, and love. After “Aquaparque”, which won the awards for Best European Short and Best Portuguese Director at Curtas 2018, Ana Moreira returns to Vila do Conde with another story about the relationships between male and female, but now more raw, incisive, and as suggested by the title itself, more bitter. Based on a creation by theater director Nuno M. Cardoso, Ana Moreira wrote and directed a work dominated by Íris Cayatte’s hypnotic presence, which offers a pertinent reflection on human and gender relations mediated by digital technology. (PC)
