The advent of film education in Spain began to take shape theoretically in the early 1940s. This was ratified in 1947 with the founding of the first Spanish film school, in the midst of Franco's dictatorship. Initially, the center was called the Instituto de Investigaciones y Experiencias Cinematográficas (IIEC), later renamed the Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía (EOC). From the school's inception until its closure in 1976, it underwent an evolution that was fundamental for Spanish cinema, in such a way that the main changes in the latter have their origin in the school. The first films by the greatest Spanish filmmakers, known at the teaching level as "prácticas", were also filmed there. Its catalogue totals some 500 outstanding productions on a technical and artistic level, making this educational center the largest Spanish producer of short films during the Franco regime. Many distinguished students passed through the IIEC/EOC, including members of the renowned New Spanish Cinema movement (1962-67). However, they were not the only important names. To give a good account of the potential of this school, we present “La tarde del domingo” (1957), the graduation practice of the recently deceased Carlos Saura; as well as “La caza de brujas” (1967) by Antonio Drove, one of the most interesting titles of the school in terms of its production and its relationship with censorship. These titles accompany the presentation of the book “As prácticas do IIEC e da EOC como primordio dun novo cinema español” (2022), a detailed monograph on the progression of the school.
