Meet the juries of the 33rd Curtas Vila do Conde
The 33rd edition of Curtas Vila do Conde – International Film Festival brings together a distinguished group of professionals from the contemporary film and arts landscape to serve on the juries of its various competitive sections.
The main competition section will be judged by Maureen Fazendeiro, a filmmaker and screenwriter whose work has been showcased at major festivals such as Cannes, TIFF, FID Marseille, and Cinéma du Réel. She lives and works in Lisbon and frequently collaborates with director Miguel Gomes.
Joining her is Anne Gaschütz, film programmer and current director of FILMFEST DRESDEN. With experience at festivals such as the Locarno Film Festival, she is also a co-founder of Talking Shorts and a member of the European Film Academy.
Completing the panel is filmmaker and writer João Rosas, known for a body of work that spans fiction and documentary. His films have won awards at Curtas Vila do Conde, BAFICI, and Brive, and his latest work, A Vida Luminosa, continues his poetic and consistent trajectory in Portuguese cinema.
The jury for the festival’s most daring and formally innovative section features artist and filmmaker Tânia Dinis, whose work blends cinema, performance, and personal archive materials. Her films have earned national and international recognition.
João Terras, curator and interim artistic director of CIAJG and visual arts at A Oficina (Guimarães), brings a background that bridges visual arts and cinema. He has collaborated with notable contemporary artists and was involved in Portugal’s representation at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale.
Rounding out the panel is American filmmaker Billy Woodberry, a central figure in the L.A. Rebellion movement. His groundbreaking film Bless Their Little Hearts (1984) is a landmark of independent Black cinema. His work has been screened at MoMA, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, and at major film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Rotterdam.
For the competition dedicated to the intersection of sound and image, the festival has assembled a panel of three figures from the music and audiovisual worlds.
emmy Curl, singer, composer, and filmmaker, is one of the first female music producers in Portugal. Known for her distinctive visual language, she has built a career that bridges sonic experimentation and cinematic aesthetics.
André Tentugal, musician and director, has created a wide range of music videos for both Portuguese and international artists. His work reflects a deep understanding of the interplay between music and moving image.
The jury also includes PZ (Paulo Zé), musician and visual creator, recognized for his irreverent style and hands-on approach to directing his own music videos. In 2025, he released the album Apocalypse Later, reinforcing his place in Portugal’s music and visual arts scene.
With this year’s jury selection, Curtas Vila do Conde once again affirms its role as a space for dialogue between diverse artistic languages and generations, bringing together distinct voices to reflect on the present and future of cinema.
