“Radical Intimacy”: a Program Exploring Deep Connections as a Political Act
Bilhetes
This year, Curtas Vila do Conde joins Vienna Shorts and the Reykjavík International Film Festival to present "Radical Intimacy", a film program that challenges how we perceive intimacy in the contemporary world.
This initiative is part of the Triangle project, which annually invites two festivals to collaborate with Vienna Shorts on exploring a common theme. In 2024, the chosen theme is precisely “radical intimacy.”
In a world marked by capitalist logic and increasing detachment, "Radical Intimacy" proposes to view closeness as a political space, where human relationships — whether friendships, family, or community — become forms of resistance. The program is curated by Daniel Hadenius-Ebner, Filipa Guimarães, Francisco Dias, Miguel Dias, and Pedro Emilio Segura Bernal.
The programming includes three distinct sections, each with a unique approach to the theme. Pedro Emilio Segura Bernal, programmer of the Reykjavík Festival, presents a deeply personal selection that he describes as “a kind of abstract diary” of his last four years of curating. According to him, the chosen films — delicate, playful, and moving — reflect a journey of discovery and connection with filmmakers, in an ongoing exercise of intimate storytelling.
In the "Intimacy Emergency" section, Daniel Hadenius-Ebner offers five films that dive into emotionally complex situations — from broken relationships to solidarity in the face of loss. Here, intimacy is seen as a silent rebellion, where vulnerability becomes strength and human bonds emerge as resistance against the world’s indifference.
"We Will Never Be Alone", curated by Francisco Dias, presents four works that address belonging — to a family, a generation, a community. From confronting racism to environmental critique, these narratives affirm union as the true space of freedom and expression.
"Radical Intimacy" will be screened at Curtas Vila do Conde as part of an international collaboration that celebrates cinema as a tool for connection, listening, and transformation. A proposal that invites us to reflect: what would it be like to live in a world that truly embraces interdependence?
