The International Competition is part of the Curtas Vila do Conde Festival since its first edition back in 1993. Over the years, it has proved to be a great opportunity to discover and showcase the best short films from all over the world. This section has distinguished itself for its diversity in terms of geographic origin of the films, styles (fiction, documentary and animation) and cinema tendencies such as narrative or non-narrative, contemplative or subjective among other diverse hypotheses.

Another great feature of this section is the way it presents, side by side, the new work of renowned authors and of the emergent talents of the world cinema. This year, among the “veterans”, we have names such as Lucrecia Martel (“Camarera de Piso”), Clara Simón (“Carta a mi madre para mi hijo”), Antonin Peretjatko (“Les algues maléfiques”), Jean-Gabriel Périot (“L'effort des hommes”), Théo Dégen (this time with “Alice and the Sunflowers”, co-directed with Charlotte Muller), and the duo Benjamin de Burca and Bárbara Wagner (“Fala da Terra”), a habitué of Curtas. As for the new authors, this will be an opportunity to discover the work of Sarah-Anaïs Desbenoit (French), Morad Mostafa (Egyptian), Julia Kowalski (French), Zhang Dalei (Chinese), Lucas Malbrun (French-German), Francesco Sossai (Italian) and Gorostidi Agirretxe (Spanish).
